Rubik’s Cubes

Over the past few months I have adopted the persona of "The Rubik’s Cube Guy" within college. So I taught i may tell the tale, the origin of The Rubik’s Cube Guy

I bought my first cube on the 25th of July, inspired by a YouTube search of "a". The first result was a tutorial on solving a Rubik’s cube (which I have previously posted here). So I went ahead and bought a little cube key ring to learn with.DSC06892

By the following August I had bought a DIY cube and my key ring cube found a place of pride around my neck. After a few months I had my solve time down to an average of one minuet, bought some textured tiles to replace my battered stickers, bought some silicone based lube to make the turns smoother. and forced my personal best down to  37 seconds.

But then I seemed to hit a bit of a wall where I was not getting any better and my focus turned more to Facebook Tetris (maybe it should have been more to my college learning) Now Christmas has passed and my parents bought me a 5×5 cube, my interest has been sparked again. Having only solved it a few times, I get it done in around 15 minuets.

Don LaFontaine

I have just seen that Don LaFontaine (the guy who did most of the film trailer voiceovers) died September 1st. Besides the downer that somebody has died people are thinking about weather film trailers will ever be the same again, I must admit I think I will miss his voice. bellow is a short video I found about his career, its definitely worth a watch.

Seagate FreeAgent 500GB External Hard Drive

DSC03794 Well it was my birthday on the 5th and my main present was a much needed external hard drive. I have been after one for a while now and never got round to getting one, and with my birthday coming up I decided to order one. So I had a quick glance around and this one caught my eye, and with a 5 Year warranty all was good.

The reason I wanted it was for backing up data and to transfer large amounts of data from place to place. It does both very well, so it is perfect really. It is a VERY dark brown with an orange light down the side, connects via USB 2.0 and comes with some handy backup software.

Capture

Here you can get information on your drive, test your drive, check for updates and change power saving settings. And of course when you go to the backup tab you can customise which folders to back up when ect.

Capture

All in all it is a handy little safety net incase anything goes wrong with my valuable data, and also in a way it is a 500GB flash drive (although sadly it needs ac power so it isn’t very portable) It is very discrete, said to take up the same desk room as a stapler. There is nothing more to say than it cost around £60 with postage from ebuyer and it is really worth it, so if you are thinking of buying an external hard drive I suggest you look at Seagate’s FreeAgent range.

As you can see, it doesn’t take up much space at all, but it does look more black than it does in that photo on the left.

Beyond Crazy Music Video

I am a real fan of good adverts, and good advert music. So when I heard the weird music for the new Seat advert I was quite happy and set off looking for the music.

Somebody somewhere said it was Frontier Psychiatrist by The Avalanches. It does sound a lot like it but the lyrics are different (and better) but it definitely is not the correct song. But it sure is VERY strange even by my standards. So then on further looking I found this link giving all the info I needed http://www.visit4info.com/advert/Seat-Ibiza-A-Touch-of-Creative-Madness-SEAT-Ibiza/61636.

So it is called Mad House and it was made especially for the advert, not available to buy. So yes, hopefully you enjoyed Frontier Psychiatrist, that was the main reason for this article.

Aeroturbines

http://www.metaefficient.com/images/aerotecture_wind_turbine.jpg

I just recently came across this interesting product, long story short it is a different design for wind turbines. I am not one of those people who goes on and on about greener energy sources, but I am one of those who appreciates a good idea.

I have a YouTube video for you which explains everything better than I ever could, but here is a brief outline given on the site:

“Aeroturbines are wind turbines designed for urban settings.  Invented by University of Illinois industrial design professor, Bil Becker, Aeroturbines are a new development in wind turbine technology.  Aeroturbines can be installed on existing rooftops or built into the architecture of new buildings to provide clean renewable electricity at its site of consumption.  Aeroturbines are uniquely suited to urban environments because they are:

  • Noise and vibration-free
  • Safe for birds
  • Able to utilize multi-directional and gusting winds
  • Self-regulating (no overspeed protection required)
  • Low maintenance
  • Made from low-cost and readily available materials”

http://www.aerotecture.com

Personally I am just glad that people are going a different way about things with wind power. I have nothing against the current turbines, in fact I really like them, how they look and sound is very appealing to me. But I think these Aeroturbines are just perfect. That is all I have to say really, I hope you found this interesting.

Solving a Rubik’s Cube

Bored last night I was thinking of a LEGO hamster lift I had seen some time recently, then that brought me back to the LEGO Rubik’s Cube Rubik’s solver I found a long time ago, which then led me to thinking how to actually solve a Rubik’s Cube. I did some quick searching on the internet and immediately came across these two videos which take you through the process quite nicely. I found it all very interesting so hopefully you will too. Enjoy:

So now you have an idea of how to solve a Rubik’s Cube you might want to look at these online Rubik’s Cubes to test out your skills. Here are a few links for you:

iPod Shuffle

 DSC03010

Well this is certainly a position I never thought I would ever be in, I am now the proud owner of a 2GB iPod Shuffle. My Dad works at the 3M factory nearby as a “Tool Maker” which is a form of engineer. You will probably have heard of 3M before because it is all around you, they seem to have their fingers in all sorts of pies , they are one of the biggest companies out there. So being such a big company it seems that they can give out iPods left right an centre.

My Dad’s workplace was named “2007 HealthCare Division of the Year” so as a token of appreciation everybody got a free iPod Shuffle. The thing I found most interesting was that it wasn’t from last year’s generation, which you often see with free iPods.

So my Dad got a free shuffle, ’sadly’ he has no real use for it because of his relentless devotion to cassettes. His portable musical needs include recording his favourite soul radio show and playing it on his Walkman. So if anybody knows how to record FM radio to a digital file please tell me.

So he has no use for it and I had no problems with giving it a loving home on my desk. You may already know I own and love my iPod Touch, so why would I even want a shuffle? Really the main reason is because it is just nice to have. Listening to music with it I find myself smiling at how small it really is. Other than being cool it does serve a real purpose, with my touch I find myself using Safari and Mail more than I am listening to music. The thing with the shuffle is that it is ONLY music so I find myself listening more and just enjoying my music a lot more. Another use I have for it is its Xbox 360 compatibility, for reasons unknown the 360 does not recognise my touch, but is happy to play music from my shuffle. The final good thing is that it is serves as a backup if for whatever reason my touch is out of batter.  It is just really handy.

DSC03011DSC03016DSC03013DSC03038DSC03040

Its an unbelievably tiny, screenless MP3 player. The buttons are great to press with very nice tactile feedback(I forgot how much I miss buttons from suing my touch for a year), the player itself is a clip so you can attach it to your clothes or anything you would like (I quite like clipping mine to one of my teddies to create some sort of musical animal) It syncs through a little dock, rather than telling itself to sync with your entire library (most peoples wouldn’t fit) it Autofills the player randomly with songs from your library or from a playlist. A nice touch is the ability to choose higher rated songs more often rather than just syncing all the rubbish.

All in all it is a fantastic little player for just listening to music, great for exercise or any high movement activities. Apple supplies a shorter cable (0.4m) with this player which is nicely tailored to the size of the player. I was really surprised with this little player, it really is good. In the past I thought that not having a screen was its biggest flaw, but really it is its greatest feature, it sets it apart nicely from all the other players out there (good idea Apple)

DSC03024

Another thing to praise 3M for is that they had the players engraved with “3M DDS” which I think is the name of the subsection of 3M which my Dad is employed under. Either way it is the nice finishing touch.

So all in all I am one happy bunny, new gadget for free which I have genuine use for, what more can I ask for? So don’t be surprised if when you next see me my collection of Mario badges are joined by my sexy new shuffle.

Social Networks

ScreenHunter_01 Jun. 22 17.52

As you may know, I am not a fan of these social networking sites. I’m not sure why I don’t like them, I just don’t. Hearing the news of the new Google Trends feature allowing you to compare site popularity I thought I would compare the three main social networking sites amongst my friends.

I had also recently heard that Facebook had taken over MySpace in worldwide numbers but was still way behind in the US, but of course I am more interested in the UK, so I had a look at how each site measured.

Certainly at my school Bebo seemed to be the site of choice, but more often than not most people would have MySpace and other smaller ones such as tagged. But a site I saw the least of invitation wise was definitely Facebook. I know very few people who are on Facebook and I only remember turning down a few friend invitations for Facebook (I get a fair amount from MySpace and Bebo so don’t think I’m a looser ha ha) . So you can imagine my surprise when I saw how much more popular Facebook actually is, and it is still rising pretty quickly.

MySpace recently updated a bit, new look video player and a nicer interface. But it is still very bad to use. One thing I cannot get over is that in the mail tab at the top there is no link to your inbox (that would be on the top of my list to put in a Mail tab), through the whole site things don’t seem to be where they should be.

ScreenHunter_06 Jun. 22 18.13

What is interesting though are the differences in different regions. Scotland seem to be Bebo fans and smaller islands seem to have no preference. If I was in charge of a small island like the Isle of Man I would make sure each house was part of a social networking site, just so I could say we were the most connected island. It would be quite nice to have all your neighbours friends and family connected like that, I’m sure that is the goal of all these sites, but of course competition ruins everything. Its the same with computers really, I think if Microsoft or something else did not dominate the market then home users would not welcome computers into there homes from fear of annoying compatibility issues.ScreenHunter_02 Jun. 22 17.55

An idea I had was to have a sort of social networking hub site which pulled information from all your social accounts and put the information in one place (similar to what Google Reader does with regular websites) This would get rid of all the hassle of checking on 3 sites and just get all the information from one site.

In conclusion, I don’t know which is the best and which is the worst social networking site. I do like the html and css support in MySpace, but I don’t think it can live off that forever. I would like to hear which your favourites are and what you don’t like about the others, I just wish there was one that really impressed me and I could get all my friends on, but that isn’t going to happen is it.

Leafy is all grown up.

DSC02490

I planted my 3 strongest sunflowers the other week, Stemy Leafy and Soily. I was quite impressed with the rate of growth, outdoors does seem to be the best for plants. I have 3 more left in my room needing planting and one little baby who isn’t ready yet. So yes, its all good, everybody is healthily and I have some cacti growing which are already starting to sprout.

So look forward to seeing some nice flowering sunflowers and some baby cactuses any time soon.
